Barclays strategists forecast a 25 basis point (bps) interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, despite market expectations heavily favoring a larger 50 bps reduction. Current market pricing indicates a 65-70% chance of a 50bps cut, a significant increase from just weeks ago when the probability was around 17%.
Barclays acknowledges that recent data, including weak employment reports and soft inflation readings, support the argument for a 50bps cut. However, they highlight economic indicators such as low unemployment (4.2%) and strong consumer spending, which suggest caution.
While the Fed usually aligns with market pricing, Barclays believes this is one instance where the central bank should push back, opting for a smaller 25bps cut to avoid signaling more aggressive future cuts.
